May 15-19, Great Salt Lake Bird Festival

The 2014 Festival takes birders of all skill levels to the great birding locations in seven counties in northern Utah and Utah County.  Birding by car, van, bus, horseback, and kayak are all available.  The Festival offers the best birding guides in Utah.

The Nature Conservancy is sponsoring conservation geographer and expert birder, Tim Boucher as the Keynote speaker at the Dutch oven dinner on Saturday, May 17th.  He is also guiding several field trips and presenting a workshop.  We are excited to share his expertise and fun accent.

GREAT SALT LAKE BIRD FESTIVAL STUDENT ART CONTEST

Utah K-12 students invited to create a picture of a Broad-tailed Hummingbird (2015 spotlight bird)

The 16th annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival announces its 2014 Student Art Contest, sponsored in part by a grant from the Davis County Commissioners’ Cup Golf Tournament and Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper. All Utah students from kindergarten to 12th grade are invited to submit an original drawing or painting in color of a Broad-tailed Hummingbird using personal observation, field guides, or Internet resources to research their artwork.  An instructional packet with pictures is available atwww.GreatSaltLakeBirdFest.com

The Broad-tailed Hummingbird will be the 2015 Festival Spotlight bird.

Contest entries will be judged in one of four grade categories, with winning artists from each category receiving cash prizes. An overall Best of Show image will also be chosen and featured on the 2015 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival’s promotional materials. Entries must be hand delivered or postmarked by May 2, 2014 at festival headquarters in Farmington (Davis County Administration Building, 61 South Main Street Farmington UT 84025 Room 304).

All artwork will be displayed for public viewing as part of the festival, to be held May 15-19, 2014. The event is expected to draw more than 3,500 local and out-of-state participants for numerous field trips, workshops, free family activities, and special speakers. Although Utah’s incredible array of wild birds is the focus of the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about a range of topics including local geology, reptiles, botany, mammals, and insects.
