Rosy-finch bird feeder count project – Volunteer Recruitment

Calling all bird enthusiasts – we need you!!
We are now recruiting volunteers from across the western U.S. for our winter Rosy-finch Bird Feeder survey project. Volunteers for this project spend 20-minutes each month from December through April doing a count of Rosy-finches and other birds at their home bird feeder, or a publicly accessible feeder near them. To participate, you just need to be located within the winter range of the three North American Rosy-finch species: the Gray-crowned, Black, and Brown-capped Rosy-finch (see map below). Even if you haven’t seen rosy-finches at your feeder before, if you’re in the range, we’d love your participation! We will be hosting a live zoom training on November 15th from 7pm-8pm MST, or participants can watch the recording afterward. New Governor Spencer Cox is pushing a proposed merger of DNR and DEQ. It’s a terrible idea for a whole host of reasons, starting with the very different missions of the departments. DNR is primarily responsible for putting natural resources to “beneficial use”; DEQ’s role is to protect the public health. Many view this move as a hostile takeover by DNR that will diminish the role of DEQ.

Call the Governor’s Office (801.538.1000) and express your opposition to this ill-advised effort. Urge the Governor to withdraw this bill proposal and call for an independent study of the issue for the rest of 2021.
