It’s time to order bird seed to help attract feathered friends for the December Bird Count! Good news is that we are able to offer at the same price as last year. Great news is that the no-mess patio blend (sunflower chips, hulled white millet, and chopped peanut hearts) is perfect for feeders that attach to windows with suction cups – dollar store toothbrush holding cups work very well!

The annual seed sale helps support local environmental research, conservation, and education, including the Stokes Nature Center preschool, Clark Rushing’s Lazuli Bunting research (hint: offer millet and the Lazuli Buntings will come!), and the Bear River Land Conservancy Native Plant Restoration research. We’re also working on new projects such as a Beaver Teaching Trunk at the USU Museum of Anthropology, and a new Beaver Display at Hardware Ranch. Stay tuned for Bird-Friendly Living episodes of Wild About Utah on Utah Public Radio. Work is underway on new signage for Sue’s Pond at the Logan Wetland Park on 1900 West, and we’ve made good progress managing invasive Phragmites in our Amalga Barrens Sanctuary.

Note: If you can only offer one thing, offer water. If only one seed, choose black oil sunflower seed, which appeals to a wide variety of birds year round.

Lazuli Buntings pick caterpillars, spiders, grasshoppers, ants, beetles, butterflies, and other insects from leaves and grasses in the understory. They also eat berries and seeds from serviceberry, chokecherry, wild oats, chickweed, and other grasses. They frequent bird feeders, especially those filled with white proso millet.
