Dear Neighbors,

The National Arbor Day Foundation has designated the City of Logan as a Tree City USA since 1984. This honor is maintained through the four pillar program which includes having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita, and an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

City Forester Rex Davis has been serving in the Forestry Division of the Logan City Environmental Department for nearly half of our time with the status as a Tree City USA, and is working hard to ensure a healthy and diverse urban forest. He will demonstrate good tree planting practices, including a wide hole which is 2” shallower than the root ball so that the trunk flair remains 2” above grade. The hole is like a shallow bowl, with scored, sloping sides and a bottom of undisturbed native soil. The hole needs to be three times the width of the pot, and the backfill watered to settle. No soil amendments are recommended. Water well for the first two years after planting.* Newly planted trees need watering one to two times a week in April and May, and three to four times from June through August.**

The finishing touch is the 3 to 4 inch layer of mulch in a donut pattern to ensure a mulch exclusion zone with a 3” gap to prevent rot at the tree base. The mantra to remember is “Donuts, Not Volcanoes” – resist the urge to make a mountain of mulch at the base of the tree!

Please join us for donuts and donut mulching as we celebrate Arbor Day by planting a Bur Oak tree on the south side of Merlin Olsen Central Park on Thursday, April 24th, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Thanks!

Hilary
