Bridgerland Audubon Society Field Trip:
Sharp-tailed Grouse Lek

Due to lack of water higher on the mountain and lambing season, our visit to the Selman ranch sharp-tail grouse lek could not occur this year. However, we visited a sage grouse lek on Ant Flats road south of Hardware Ranch.

This trip is suitable for both novice and experienced birders. Participation requires driving and hiking on a dirt road that could be slick.

We were careful to observe the grouse, not disturbing their activities. Thus we maintained our distance. Binoculars or spotting scopes were recommended, but not required.

Call Jack Greene at 435-764-4815 with questions.

This year’s Greater Sage Grouse Event:
Greater Sage-Grouse are a little different from Sharp-tailed Grouse. However, both display on leks. The particular lek we will see is south of the Utah DWR Hardware Ranch facility.

Jack’s message to Lyle after the event and sending the above two pictures:

Lyle: How close were the grouse?

Jack: Guessing 50 yards. Several were next to a truck pulled near the lek, but given our numbers and 5 vehicles, we kept our distance. We had sharp tail grouse on a lek behind us but difficult to see.

Lyle: Fun to have them close together

Jack: An unforgettable experience with wonderful people! My first time on a greater Sage grouse lek. “
