Birding with Bridgerland Audubon--Green Canyon Owling

Birding with Bridgerland Audubon Birding
6 pm Green Canyon Owling

Important time change below!

This month we will be diverting from our normal morning bird walk in search of owls! We will meeting at green canyon in the evening to have the best chance at hearing and maybe seeing some owls. Owls are notoriously shy so we plan on hearing more than we’ll see. The species we are most likely to hear are Western Screech Owls and Great Horned Owls, though we may also hear Pygmy or Saw-whet Owls.

If carpooling, meet at 6pm at the Smiths marketplace on 700 North. We will then drive to the first gate in Green Canyon, just past King Nature Park. If you would like to meet us there, our start time will be close to 6:20pm. It will be very cold so please dress warm with gloves and thick socks. As we will be out in the dark, bring a headlamp or flashlight.

We are very grateful to the forest service who is waiving the newly implemented fee’s for us that evening!

Trip Report:

Our good luck continued this month and the canal water flooding the road earlier in the week had receded completely by Saturday morning. Temperatures were blissfully cool in the 60’s. A large group of over 25 people turned out again to join Meg and Dawn in this open agricultural area to find about 37 species of birds. We had some human returnees including the Hyrum Senior Center, USU international students and new faces including several “summer citizens”. Mosquitos were not too prevalent. We walked about a mile north on the good dirt road to the Logan River. Some of the highlights were Wilson’s Snipe doing their winnowing flight displays, a pair of American Bitterns flying by, both Eastern and Western Kingbirds, a few lingering Great Blue Herons on nests at the rookery and songs of both the Common Yellowthroat and Sora along with quick glimpses of Marsh Wrens. A Savannah Sparrow also posed obligingly for pictures and entertained us with its buzzy song.
