Event Report:
“Yesterday afternoon we had a wonderful “bulrushes planting” at the Audubon Sanctuary. Kayo pulled it together in four amazing parts. First a great intro time at the church, then to the bulrushes sanctuary on the Barrens (major digging and washing), then to the plant area on the Sanctuary for more serious work, and last—Kayo did not want us out too early—we all gave him our short poetry spots (for Jim Caine and me it was something like “amazing birds and frogs singing at this wonderful place”) for him to add to a long poetic piece dealing with the need for a new environmental presence/reality. Amazing turnout, about 10 besides Kayo. And Jack even found the pizza, eventually.” –Bruce Pendery

Folks,
In order to create more waterfowl habitat along the Clay Slough portion of the BAS Amalga Barrens Sanctuary we are looking for a crew to work a couple hours transplanting Hardstem Bulrush from a nearby marsh.
Meet at the LDS Church at 1:00 p.m. [6521 N 2400 W, Amalga, UT]
I’ll be driving a small, white pick-up. We’ll carpool from there. Follow 100 North St. west from Smithfield west until you cross the Bear River and then pass the Schreiber Smithfield Cheese Plant (2180 West 6550 North, Smithfield). Turn north at the crossroads and take 2400 West to the church which is on the west side of the road, about a half mile south of the Barren’s turn-off.
EQUIPMENT: Sharp shovels, gloves, sun hats, footwear suitable for the marsh (wet and muddy), humor, enthusiasm.

Hardstem Bulrush is a marvelous native reed. It provides cover, seed, and roots for many marshland dwellers. Seed viability is low but it responds very well to vegetative transplant. There is much evidence that global warming has impacted seed dormancy and germination rates of Bulrush plants.
